In a week where he missed just one field goal attempt and three free throws, all while averaging a double-double, #1 LSUA men’s basketball player William Claiborne was named the Red River Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Claiborne, a senior forward/center from Slidell, La., dominated the interior for the Generals as LSUA clinched the program’s third outright RRAC regular season championship, and fourth overall, in the program’s five years of play. For the week, he made 15 of the 16 field goals he attempted while averaging 21.5 points per game on the week. In Friday’s 113-106 win over Huston-Tillotson, Claiborne made all six shots he attempted, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds as the Generals officially earned the outright conference championship. The next night at St. Thomas, he made nine of ten shots as he went off for career highs in both points (28) and rebounds (15) as LSUA won its 18th straight contest with a 90-81 victory over the Celts.
Dominating the interior, Claiborne leads the entire NAIA by connecting on 74.7% of his shots. While he sits fourth in the RRAC in total rebounding average at 7.8 per game, he does most of his damage on the offensive glass, where his 3.9 offensive rebounds per game also leads the country.
Claiborne and the rest of the #1 ranked Generals (26-2, 16-1 RRAC) will celebrate senior night on Tuesday as LSUA plays one last non-conference game before season’s end, welcoming in Philander Smith. Tip-off against the Panthers (11-15, 8-4 GCAC) is set for 6:00 P.M. in The Fort.
