ALEXANDRIA, La (KALB) - Having a close-knit family can be what makes or break a child. For Avoyelles running back Donnell Carter, his family has made him a better man.

Carter was practically raised by his grandmother to keep his head on straight. She passed away on December 7th, 2019, a date that he has tattooed on his forearm.
"She impacted me on everything. You could basically say that she was my momma," Carter said.
Head coach Andy Boone says that he's helped in steering Donnell on a straight path as well.
"I try to be like a father figure to him," Boone said. "I'm always picking him up, bringing him home, buying him food, and just talking to him heart to heart."
His strong upbringing bleeds out into his style of play.
"He's unselfish," Boone said. "Last week, we gave him the ball 31 times and he did a good job for us."
"It feels good when you have people that look up to you and you can do things to help them," Carter said. "There are a lot of young people that are behind me and can see how I work. When I'm gone, they can work like I did."
Family is everything to Donnell, especially his brothers on the field
"If one of us is hurt, we're going to be there to help. If any of us is down, we're going to be there to raise them up."
Last Friday, Donnell put up 31 carries, for 270 yards, and 3 touchdowns. For his performance, he's this week's Athlete of the Week.
