Texarkana, Tx (LSUA) – The LSUA men’s soccer team was able to battle the RRAC regular season champion (RV) Houston-Victoria all the way to extra rounds of penalty kicks, but the sixth round of PKs ultimately proved to undo the Generals hopes for a fourth straight finals appearance, falling 4-3 in penalties following a 0-0 draw against the Jaguars in the semifinals of the 2019 Red River Athletic Conference Soccer Championship Tournament presented by Farmers Bank & Trust semifinals Friday evening at Eagle Field on the campus of Texas A&M-Texarkana.
How It Happened:
Gonzalo Rodriguez Jugo nearly gave LSUA the lead as his third minute shot sailed barely wide of the right post. Houston-Victoria had a chance in the sixth minute as a shot slammed off the crossbar, bounced in front of the goal line, and was cleared away. That was the last really good opportunity for either team all the way to the end of the two overtime periods. In the penalty shootout, LSUA got a great start as UHV sailed the first PK high over the bar, while LSUA GK Alvaro Garcia calmly scored his PK to give LSUA a 1-0 advantage after the first round. After the two teams equaled each other in rounds two through four, LSUA had a chance to win it with a goal in round five, but the shot sailed over the bar. With the extra life, the Jaguars made their shot in round six, and LSUA’s attempt was saved, ending the Generals season.
Other Key Statistics:
Jr. D Gonzalo Rodriguez Jugo led the Generals with two shots in the match, one on goal.
Sr. D Rafael Bastos had LSUA’s only other shot on goal in the match, coming on his lone shot in the match.

Garcia finished 2019 with a LSUA single season record 71 saves.

The Generals finish the 2019 season with an 11-5-4 record, 4-3-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference, and finished fifth in the conference table but earned the four seed in the conference tournament.
