PINEVILLE, La. (LSUA Sports Information) - The LSUA women’s soccer team knew the task heading into their senior day tilt against the Red River Athletic Conference-leading Southwest, win and earn a bye in the upcoming RRAC Tournament or hope to stay out from a first-round road trip, and the Generals took care of it themselves as a first-half goal by a senior leader held up for a 1-0 over the Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Louisiana College’s Wildcat Field.
How It Happened:
On her senior day, Cindy Parenteau replicated her goal from two days earlier but did so with a bit more difficulty. In the 12th minute, and just like Thursday, Jordan DeJongh stepped into a corner kick and placed it right in front of the net. This time, Parenteau was marked, but she was still able to get her head on the ball and redirect it towards the net, putting it just out of the reach of a hustling Mustang defender who was trying to fill the void left by the goalkeeper who had misplayed the corner kick for the 1-0 LSUA lead. From there, the LSUA defense took over, holding the Mustangs to just one shot on goal for the entire match, a shot that really didn’t cause LSUA goalkeeper Terrie Tchoffo any real issues. The Generals did that all while holding the conference’s leader in goals scored, shots, and shots on goal coming into the match, to no shot attempts all match long.
“We were very fortunate to score early and then try to manage the score,” said LSUA head coach Nea Sunila. “Southwest is a very good team, so this is a big win for us. Now we get to have a weekend off from playing and can focus on a bit of recovery and prepare for the tournament.”
Other Key Statistics:
Sr. D Cindy Parenteau scored her fourth goal of 2019 on her lone shot of the senior day match.
Sr. D Jordyn DeJongh put both shots she took in the match on target. Her assist was her third of the season.
Jr. GK Terrie Tchoffo didn’t have to do much to pick up her third straight clean sheet, making just one save in the match.
LSUA took six shots in the match, putting five on frame. Southwest took four shots, with just one on target.
The Generals (12-4-1, 6-2-1 RRAC) now take the two-seed into the 2019 Red River Athletic Conference presented by Farmers Bank & Trust. With it, the Generals will enjoy a week off as they wait to see who they’ll play in the semifinal round, which will be the highest seed to emerge out of the next week’s first-round matches. The semifinals will be November 7th at Texas A&M-Texarkana’s Eagle Field, with LSUA’s game time still to be announced.
