BATESVILLE, Ark. - Sophomore defenseman Alan Albornoz’s first career goal as a General held up as the (RV) LSUA men’s soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 1-0 win over the Lyon Scots Tuesday afternoon at J. Marshall Huser Field.
How It Happened:
The Generals got the decisive goal in the 39th minute off of a corner kick. Daniel Aviles served up the corner that actually found the foot of Lyon defenseman Diego Mendez, but Mendez’s clearance attempt rolled perfectly to Albornoz, who chipped a shot from 20 yards out and placed it perfectly just over the outstretched fingers of Scot goalkeeper Vicente Alamos and under the crossbar for the match’s only goal.
“Having played Lyon at their field in the past, we know what a tough place it is to play there,” said LSUA head men’s soccer coach Michael Poropat. “Their coaching staff always has them well prepared and they will win a lot of games this season. Our hard work really paid off today. Now we need to turn our focus to our next opponent.”
Other Key Statistics:
Albornoz’s goal was not only his first of 2019, but the first of his LSUA career in his second season with the squad.
Sr. MF Daniel Aviles picked up his second career assist, and first of 2019, on Albornoz’s goal.
So. GK Alvaro Garcia was credited with two saves to notch his ninth career clean sheet, his first of 2019 after a LSUA single season record eight shutouts in 2018.
Fr. F Daniel Pensasto led LSUA’s offensive attack with three shots, putting them all on target.
Both teams took 11 shots in the match, but the key was accuracy as LSUA put eight of their shots on frame while only two of Lyon’s attempts were on frame.
The Generals have their home opener this Saturday, August 24th as part of a men’s & women’s doubleheader against the Central Baptist College Mustangs at Generals Field. The women’s match starts at 1:00 PM with the men’s match set to start at 3:00 PM or about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women’s match.
