Johnny Jones lands head coaching job at TSU

HOUSTON -- Johnny Jones is a head basketball coach once again.

Following a year from his departure at LSU, it was announced on Monday that Jones, a DeRidder native, will be taking over the men's program at Texas Southern.

Jones spent this past season as an assistant coach at Nevada under Eric Musselman, who served as an assistant on Jones' staff at LSU. The Wolfpack made it all the way to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament last March.

In five seasons at LSU, Jones posted an overall record of 90-72 with his alma mater, making once tournament appearance. He was relieved of his coaching duties following a disastrous 2016-17 season that saw the Tigers win just two games in the Southeastern Conference.

Jones now heads to TSU in what will be his second head coaching job in the state of Texas. Starting in 2001, he coached North Texas for 11 seasons, leading the Mean Green to Sun Belt Tournament titles in 2007 and 2010.
