CLARKSVILLE, Ark. -- The Louisiana College men’s basketball team picked up their first American Southwest Conference victory of the season on Saturday evening, a 79-69 final over the University of the Ozarks. The Wildcats took advantage of 25 points scored off 20 Eagle turnovers in the game. The Wildcat men next play their first game in H.O. West Fieldhouse Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. against rival East Texas Baptist University.
Ozarks had an early lead in the first few minutes of Saturday’s game, but a pair of jumpers from Travis Schultz a couple minutes apart put the Wildcats on top for the only lead change of the game. Schultz jumpers started a 19-5 Wildcat run that carried them through the midway point of the first half and put them on top 23-12.
Five quick points by the Eagles with three minutes left in the half cut the Wildcats double-digit lead down to six, but two free throws from Devon Washington and another jumper from Schultz ended the half for LC and the 37-27 lead. The Wildcats forced seven turnovers on steals in the first half and scored 19 of their 37 points off UO giveaways in the half.
The Wildcats maintained their double-digit advantage through the majority of the second half, stretching it to 17 on three consecutive three-point shots on three straight possessions. A 16-5 run later in the second half by the Eagles got the within 10 points of the Wildcats, but the lead was too much for them to overcome. LC made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:06 of the game to keep UO from getting any closer than 10.
Travis Schultz had a career night for the Wildcats with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, also picking up eight rebounds on the night. Trey Ames scored 11 points in the game, the first double-digit game of his career, making 9-of-10 free throw attempts. Guards Taylan Grogan and Lashard Powell each had double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Wildcat men play their first game at H.O. West Fieldhouse this season this Thursday against rival East Texas Baptist for the annual “Fill the Fieldhouse” game.
