PINEVILLE -- The Louisiana College volleyball team finished its first home stand in program history on Wednesday night at H.O. West Fieldhouse. The final of the three matches played against Belhaven University went down in three sets against the Wildcats once again as the Blazers won 25-13, 25-16, 25-17. LC travels to LeTourneau University on Friday for the first American Southwest Crossover weekend of the season.
As has become an unfortunate trend for the Wildcats this season, they found themselves behind early to Belhaven. The Blazers scored 11 of the first 13 total points of the match and had an 11-2 lead on the Wildcats in just a handful of serves. But what has also been a trend for the Wildcats came true again as they climbed back into the set, scoring eight unanswered points to get back to a 14-12 game. The Blazers though, would regain their footing and control the set the rest of the way to a 25-13 victory.
The second set began much like the first as the Wildcats found themselves down 5-0 right out of the gate, before Sadi Jones got LC on the board with a kill to make it 5-1. Belhaven held a comfortable double digit lead on the Wildcats for most of the remainder of the set, but LC had a late run in them scoring eight of the final 11 points of the set, but the lead was too great to overcome as Belhaven took the second stanza.
It appeared as if the tide was turning early in the third, as the Wildcats were the ones to take the early lead thanks to an attack error and a service ace from Brennen Parker put LC on top 2-0. The Blazers though would bounce back quickly scoring five straight points and eventually going on an 8-1 run to take the 8-3 lead on the Wildcats. LC found some momentum late in the set but once again the deficit was too great to overcome for the Cats and Belhaven finished the night with four straight points including two aces to close the evening.
Jaslyn Bright led LC in kills once again with eight on the night, and Naya Marshall was right behind her with six, a season high for the freshman from Baton Rouge. Paris Babino had another double-digit assist night and Olivia Huvall was in double digits in digs for the sixth time this season.
The Wildcats travel to LeTourneau this weekend for three matches against three members of the ASC Western Division. They will face off with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Howard Payne University on Friday afternoon and finish with Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday. LeTourneau will provide live stats for all matches and video for select matches during the weekend. Links will be available on the LC Athletics website, www.lcwildcats.net.
