ALEXANDRIA, La. (LSUA) - #20 LSUA softball utility player RyLeigh Rutherford earned two wins and a save from the circle during a weekend conference sweep that helped her earn her second RRAC Pitcher of the Week award for the season, the conference office announced on Monday.
Rutherford, a freshman from Florien, La., threw her second complete game shutout of the season, allowing only two hits on Thursday to open the three-game set against Our Lady of the Lake in a 2-0 win for the Generals win. In game one of Friday’s series-closing doubleheader, Rutherford came on with two outs in the sixth inning and the tying run on deck, and set down four straight Saints batters to preserve the LSUA win. She then came on in the second inning of the final game of the series and allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, over five innings of work, allowing the Generals bats to get going in time to pick up an 8-5 win to secure the series sweep over the Saints.
Through all three game, Rutherford worked a total of 13.1 innings and gave up the three runs, with only one earned, struck out two and walked just one batter. With the three decisions, Rutherford’s record moved to 10-4 on the season with now two saves. Her ten wins from the circle currently leads the RRAC. She was previously named Conference Pitcher of the Week back on March 4th. She and Abbey McMillian have combined to take four of the ten RRAC Pitcher of the Week awards dished out so far this season.
Rutherford and the rest of the #20 Generals (22-10, 9-3 RRAC) return home for senior weekend this weekend as LSUA hosts Texas College in a three-game RRAC series. First pitch of Friday’s doubleheader against the Steers (0-21, 0-15 RRAC) is set for 4:00 P.M. at Generals Field.
