BROWNWOOD, TX -- After more than a week between non-exhibition contests, the Louisiana College women took a little time to find their legs but once they did had little trouble dispatching Howard Payne University in an American Southwest Conference game. The Wildcats took the 72-62 road win on Thursday night on the heels of a pair of 20 point games from Jayla Landrum and Kourtney McGhee. LC will take on Sul Ross State University on Saturday afternoon in Odessa, Texas to close their 2018 conference schedule.

The Wildcats fell behind early to HPU as the Jackets knocked down some early long balls to take a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter. The Wildcats closed the gap some over the next five minutes but found themselves down by seven with four second left in the opening frame. Kourtney McGhee sparked the Wildcats will a last second three-ball to make it a 20-16 game after one.

Energized by the last second long ball, the Wildcats ran out to an 11-0 start in the second quarter to take the 27-20 lead over the first four minutes of the half. Howard Payne worked their way back to the lead but a strong ending by the Wildcats erased the work done by the Jackets. Jayla Landrum took the game in her hands in the final two minutes and willed the Wildcats to a big finish. The freshman scored the final nine points of the half to extend a one-point LC lead to a 39-29 advantage at the half.

McGhee put LC up but 14 with the first two buckets of the second half and the Wildcats maintained that double-digit margin for the majority of the third, with HPU getting within six at one point but two quick answers from Jaleya Gold and McGhee turned it back to double digits, where LC took the 55-43 lead into the fourth.

Although HPU outscored the Wildcats 19-17 in the final quarter, the lead was too much for the Jackets to overcome. The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half, matching their performance from the first half exactly. Landrum had a career best 22 points in the game going 8-for-14 from the field, missing her first career double-double by one rebound.

The Wildcats continue their ASC West trip on Saturday for a date with Sul Ross played in Odessa, Texas.
