ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - Markel Brown, also known as “Downtown Brown”, was a player known for rocking the rim and striding back down the court. He was just a kid from Alexandria that made it out of the city through the game of basketball.
"It's always been a family sport,” said Brown. “I've been in love with it from the very start."
He played at Peabody High School from 2007 to 2010, but high school was a tough time for him. Brown’s mother and uncle, whom he was close with, both died within 3 months of each other.
"I had to take my little sister under my wing,” said Brown. “I had to be strong and not be down so much because I had someone else looking up to me."
He didn’t let that adversity hold him back. It motivated him to continue to fight. Brown was given the opportunity to play in the NBA, which blessed him with better living.
Now, he is giving back to the city through his 5th annual youth basketball camp. He says that it means a lot to see so many young people show up, and he hopes to inspire the next generation.
