McGhee reaches 1,000 points but LC falls

MARSHALL, TX -- The Louisiana College women knew they would have a tough challenge ahead of them against the defending American Southwest Conference champions and nationally ranked East Texas Baptist University on Thursday night.

The Tiger defense was stifling throughout the night holding the Wildcats to a season-low 26 percent field goal percentage and their lowest point output of the season in the 68-44 loss. The Wildcats will try and respond on Saturday afternoon against LeTourneau University in Longview.

On a difficult offensive night for the Wildcats the first shot of the game became the most meaningful as senior guard Kourtney McGhee knocked down a three from the left wing. The three-points put her over the 1,000-career mark, the second year in a row a Lady Wildcat reached the prestigious milestone as McGhee joined long time teammate Brooke Jones in the club.

The shot gave LC their only lead of the game, that last only a few seconds as ETBU started the first quarter with a 15-3 stretch over the first three minutes of play. The Wildcats were able to get back within eight points near the end of the quarter with a quick run of 8-0 but a Tiger layup with 30 seconds left made it a 25-15 game at the end of the first.

The ETBU defense gave the Wildcats issue all night long, holding LC to season lows in points and field goal percentage. The struggle was most evident in the third quarter, with LC going 0-for-12 from the floor in the quarter with their only point coming on a Jayla Landrum free throw with 34 seconds left in the frame. The Tigers had a 59-27 lead after three quarters, and although LC held ETBU to a 17-9 fourth, the game was out of reach for the Wildcats as they fell 68-44 to their rival.

RyDeja McQuarn was the only LC player to reach double figures in the game with 11 points, with nine of the 11 coming from the free throw line. McGhee eclipsed 1,000 career points with seven points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the game, playing all 40 minutes of the contest.

The Lady Wildcats will take on LeTourneau University on Saturday afternoon in Longview with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
