ALEXANDRIA -- LSUA’s Kelsey Thaxton helped lead the Generals back from a 12-point second half deficit and in the process earned her second consecutive Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Thaxton, a freshman guard from Many, La., scored 18 points in the fourth quarter alone last Friday night against Paul Quinn, helping erase what had been a 12-point Tigers lead in the third quarter as the Generals defeated Paul Quinn 81-79. In that period, she hit five three-pointers and was three of four at the free throw line, with all of the free throws coming within the last 15 seconds of the game to secure the win. Overall, Thaxton finished with a new personal single game high 27 points as a General in the win over the Tigers. The next night she got a bit of a rest as LSUA opened a big lead, which allowed her to sit as the Generals rolled past Texas College. She still finished with 12 points and five rebounds even in limited action as the Generals defeated the Steers 83-58.
In the two games, Thaxton averaged 19.5 points on 46.7% shooting, including 44.4% from above the arc with eight of her buckets coming from the land of plenty. On the season, Thaxton currently leads the RRAC and is third in the NAIA in three-point field goals made, having hit 38 of them this season. She’s currently fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. The two wins kept the longest win streak in program history alive, currently sitting at seven games. LSUA has won its first four conference games for the first time in the team’s five-year existence.
This is the third straight week a General has won the RRAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award. Two weeks ago, Danyale Bayonne was honored for her work before Thaxton was credited with the award last week.
Thaxton and the rest of the Generals (11-2, 4-0 RRAC), who are receiving votes in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Top 25 Coaches’ Poll for the first time ever, return from the holiday break on Thursday, January 3rd as LSUA heads to San Antonio for a battle of teams currently undefeated in RRAC play, taking on #12 Our Lady of the Lake. Tip-off against the Saints (9-1, 4-0 RRAC) is set for 5:30 P.M. at Mabee Gymnasium.
