Tigers top Beavers - advance to CWS finals

OMAHA, Neb. (KALB) - Behind the brilliant pitching of Caleb Gilbert and the clutch hitting of Michael Papierski, the LSU Tigers stunned the top-seeded Oregon State Beavers with a 6-1 win Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.

With their second straight win over OSU, the Tigers move to the best of three championship round that starts Monday. LSU had to defeat Oregon State both on Friday and Saturday to advance.

Following Friday's great pitching effort from senior Alex Lange, LSU got another dominant pitching effort from sophomore Caleb Gilbert. Gilbert threw a career-high 7.1 innings and allowed just two hits, one run, one walk and struck out seven batters.

His pitching was backed by the hitting of Papierski who hit two home runs in the game and became the first player to hit two home runs in a game since the CWS moved to TD Ameritrade.

Before Friday, Oregon State had only lost four times in 60 games. The two wins improved LSU to 52-18 on the season. Oregon State’s season ends at 56-6.
