NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB) - The Northwestern State Demons have been a special group. Now, the pieces are all coming together.

Last season they went 5-6 winning of their last 4, but they're looking to rewrite their story.
Upfront, the Demons are anchored by their offensive line led by seniors Johnathan Hubbard, Chris Zirkle, and Dustin Burns. Keeping the pocket clean as possible was an emphasis after the line only gave up 32 sacks on the season.
Another thing that's for certain is the quarterback, Shelton Eppler. He passed for almost 2,700 yards and 26 touchdowns last year. At this point, he feels more comfortable than ever.
Eppler transferred to NSU from Trinity Valley. He's familiar with the offensive coordinator Brad Smiley, who coached at Trinity Valley. Smiley being there has been key to Eppler’s development.
On defense, they have some head hunters at safety in Hayden Bourgeois and Ryan Reed. They say that it's the mindset of the Purple Swarm defense.
The Demons open play on the road at UT-Martin on August 29, and Coach Laird has full confidence in his team.
