After a doubleheader sweep to start the season on Friday, the Louisiana College softball team added two more wins on Saturday, sweeping Millsaps with a walk-off 7-6 win in game one and a 6-2 victory in game two. Double digit hits in all four games of the weekend helped carry the Wildcats to a 4-0 start to the season. The Wildcats won't play again until the open conference play on February 22 at Howard Payne University.
After a scoreless first the Wildcats get on the board first on a Millsaps miscue at the plate as Sami Walters raced home on a passed ball after her 2-out triple put her 60-feet away. A second straight 1-2-3 inning for starting pitcher Cameron Crochet got the Wildcat offense back to the plate with the chance to extend their lead.
Jade Brady delivered again with an RBI single to center, and ended up at third thanks to an error in the outfield. She would score on another error as Shaye Tredinich put the ball in play but was mishandled at short. Another Walters extra base hit would make it 4-0 Wildcats after three innings.
The lead would evaporate quickly for the Wildcats in the fifth, as the first four batters of the inning reached base. A walk and a fielder's choice made it 4-2 Wildcats but a bases-clearing, 2-out double to left put the Majors on top for the first time 5-4 before relief pitcher Sarah Gartman retired the side.
The lead wouldn't stay in the Majors' hands long as the Wildcats tied things in the bottom of the inning on a Tredinich RBI ground out. Both teams added a run in the sixth, with Shelby Bergeron brining in Alyssa Ross on a sacrifice bunt in the inning. Gartman would strike out the side in the seventh keeping things tied at six headed into the bottom of the inning.
After two ground outs to start the inning, Samantha Cetta drove a ball into the left centerfield gap for a double to put the winning run in scoring position. Sami Walters would come through again for the Wildcats with a base hit up the middle brining pinch runner Bre Newman racing around third for the winning run.
Walters finished a home run shy of the cycle with three hits and two RBI, while Jade Brady added two more hits and another RBI to her impressive weekend total.
With the momentum of the walk-off win on their side the Wildcats wasted no time getting the scoring started in the second game of the day. A walk and steal of second put speedster Briley Johnston in scoring position in the first, allowing Kaitlyn Moore to drive her in to put LC up 1-0 in the first.
The Wildcats would break things open a bit in the third as the first two batters of the inning deposited balls on the other side of the fence as Abby Sterling and Jady Brady hit back-to-back homeruns to start the inning and put LC up 3-0. An Alyssa Ross RBI single later in the frame made it 4-0 after three. Millsaps though would cut the lead in half in the next half inning with a 2-out rally after Brady struck out the first two batters of the inning. A single, two walks, and a wild pitch allowed two runs to score before a runner's interference call at third ended the inning.
The final two LC runs of the game came in the sixth, as the Wildcats aggressive running game scored a run on a bunt single and a throwing error by the catcher. Cameron Crochet would strike out the side in the seventh to complete the win for Brady and pick up the three inning save.
