Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. In this case, Johnny Nelson is the best example of that.

"Growing up in Lecompte Louisiana, all we had to do was basketball," Rapides junior Johnny Nelson.

With that, all he knew was to work on his game, and family made sure of it.

"My favorite memory was going to the boys and girl's club every day, and playing against my cousins every day," Nelson said. They got me better," he added

"Johnny is one of that kind of player that every coach loves to have because he works hard every time that he can," head coach Travis Broussard said.

His hard work is starting to pay off. He's had a double-double in almost every district game, averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds a game.

"It means everything to be the athlete of the week," Nelson said. "My talent is finally getting noticed," he added.

"He's a hard worker, good kid, good nature, and when you get on him he takes it with a grain of salt and keeps going," Broussard said.

With all his talent, of course, he wants to take it to the big stage.

"His potential is unlimited," Broussard said.

"I dream to go and play college ball and preferably go to the NBA," Nelson said.
