Two-A-Days: Leesville Wampus Cats

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The Leesville Wampus Cats finished last season with a 7-4 record making it to the first round of playoffs and losing in a tough back-and-forth battle to St. Martinville but this season head coach Robert Causey believes they have a tougher schedule that can prepare them for those big moments.

”For us, it’s our pre-district schedule and we’re trying to increase the difficulty and improve the opponents in our pre-district because what we found is you don’t get to pick and choose who you play in the playoffs. We drew a St.Martinville team that’s a perennial quarterfinal team in the playoffs, we drew them first round and really came within two plays of winning that game but I just felt like if we had had a little bit more of a difficult schedule in the preseason playing quality teams our kids maybe would have been a little more prepared for that moment in time,” Leesvile Head Coach Robert Causey said.

The Wampus Cats lose 15 of their starters going into this season meaning some of the younger guys are going to have to step up but despite their youth, this team is determined to make a run at the state title.

”This year the expectation is the dome we want to bring the chip home this year we’re not stopping we’re going relentless all the way through because that’s really what we want ever since really last season. Last season it opened our eyes to see what we can do but we constantly made some mistakes but this year we’re going to fix it,” senior cornerback Taj Jackson said.

Wide receiver Michael Davis who is expected to play a major role this season says their mindset is what makes this team special.

”We ready to go. We have really good mindsets and our heads are high. We really want to go get it so I think that’s really our strength,” junior wide receiver Michael Davis said.

The Wampus Cats open up their season in Moss Bluff to take on the Sam Houston Broncos on Sept. 6th.
