Two-A-Days: Pickering Red Devils

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The Pickering Red Devils have had a tough go in recent memory as they haven’t won a game in three seasons but this year the Red Devils will be dropping district honors and playing a schedule that they can compete in, head coach John Daugherty believes the schedule change will help translate to success.

“We look at that (dropping district honors) as a rebuilding it’s time for us to play some teams that are on our level and with the same amount of depth that we have and try to build some success off that we’re going to play teams that are similar to us. So we feel like we have a great chance with this schedule to build some success and community support with those wins and we will win this year that’s a given we’re good enough we’re going to be playing teams I know we can compete with and we’re going to build off of that for the future,” Pickering Head Coach John Daugherty said.

Senior quarterback, AJ Berry returns to the field this season and his desire to win is greater than ever.

“I think this is the year to win, I mean winning is long overdue for us we have the potential we got the talent just need to put it to use and I think this year we’ll be able to turn it all around and be in the winning column this year for sure,” Pickering quarterback AJ Berry said.

Coach Daugherty said they’ve managed to add a bit more depth to the roster this season along with more athleticism.

“We have some kids that have come out to play that didn’t join us last year so we have a lot more athletes on the field than we did last year a year older a year stronger,” Daugherty said.

One player who hopes to keep the ship steady and help everyone fit into their roles is Xavier Mitchell.

“I think I bring integrity to this team because when I push it kind of gives other people a reason to push because when other people see that they’re going to try to do the same, I try to bring leadership with this team too because with the upper classman coming up I want to set an example for them and the team,” Pickering running back and linebacker Xavier Mitchell said.

The Red Devils start their season on the road against Gueydan on Sept. 6th.
