Guardian of the Goal: Tioga’s Kervin Johnson
TIOGA, La. (KALB) - Kervin Johnson is a junior triple-sport athlete for the Tioga Indians who plays football, basketball and track and field.
“I gotta go from practice to practice,” said junior forward Kervin Johnson. “I get my schedule changed a lot.”
“The sky is the limit, especially when he can go play basketball or he can go play football,” said Tioga’s Head Coach Christavious Gill. “I definitely believe he is capable of doing both.”
On the court, Johnson is a guardian of the Indian’s goal, having seven blocks against Grant and played a key role in snapping a two-game losing streak for the Indians.
“I was trying to end our losing streak, play hard and get a win,” said Johnson. “My coach really prepares us at practice and I don’t want to let my teammates, my coaches or my supporters down, so I just go out their and play as hard as I can.”
“[He’s] very explosive,” said Tioga’s sophomore shooting guard CJ Thomas. “He is a really great run protector. It really saves us at times when they get out on a break and he just comes up and blocks it. It saves us and takes away a lot of points that they can gain.”
Johnson is not a one-trick player, though. He excels at protecting the goal, but the junior can shoot, too, averaging about 13 points per game.
“He is a very good shooter as well,” said Thomas. “People don’t really know that, but he knock down threes when it’s time to. He is capable of finishing in the post. He got really good post game. He is very great at dunking on the break. He get out of the break really quick, throwing it up to him, he dunk.”
For his affable personality and his high quality performance on the court, Kervin Johnson is this week’s ACA athlete of the week.
