Fort Polk offering front row seat at combat training center

Central Louisiana is no stranger to hearing big booms, helicopters and the sight of military vehicles the Army uses for training at Fort Polk.
Every year the installation offers a closer look with their 'Box Tour.' It takes place Saturday, August 17 this year.
The tour shows people first-hand how soldiers at Ft. Polk and the rest of the Army train for deployment at the Joint Readiness Training Center, called 'the box.' Participants will be bussed to one of JRTC's fictional villages where soldiers from the 1st Battalion 509th, who normally play the enemy during rotations, will act out a firefight. The spectacle includes battlefield effects like explosions, airborne demonstrations, role players and static displays. The public will even have the chance to fire a 50 caliber machine gun, with blanks of course.
The JRTC and Fort Polk 2019 Box tour is open to Fort Polk, the local community and their guests.
