BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Several Louisiana officials and lawmakers are reacting to the news of a deadly plane crash in Washington D.C. late Wednesday night.

Everyone aboard an American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members that collided with an Army helicopter was feared dead in what was likely to be the worst U.S. aviation disaster in almost a quarter century, officials said Thursday.

In response to the tragedy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landy wrote “Sharon and I are deeply saddened to hear of the tragedy at DCA. We are praying for the victims, their families, friends, and the heroic first responders on scene,” on X.

U.S. Senator John Kennedy said on Facebook “Becky and I are continuing to pray for comfort for everyone who lost loved ones in the tragedy on the Potomac. I wish no one had to walk through days as dark as this one, and I hope everyone knows they’re not walking alone.”

Congressman Steve Scalise also stated, “Join me in praying for everyone involved in the plane crash at Ronald Reagan National Airport tonight as search and rescue is underway amid this devastating tragedy.”

Congresswoman Julia Letlow also posted on X “While we wait for more information, I’m praying for the victims of tonight’s plane crash in DC as well as the brave first responders conducting search and rescue operations.”

Congressman Troy Carter wrote, “Last night’s plane crash near Reagan National is heartbreaking. My prayers are with the victims’ families during this devastating time.”

At least 28 bodies were pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River after the helicopter apparently flew into the path of the jet late Wednesday as it was landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, officials said.
