Deadline to pay state income tax nears

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Time is running out for Louisiana residents to pay their state income tax on time.

According to the Louisiana Department of Revenue, the 2024 Louisiana state income tax deadline is Thursday, May 15, 2025. Tax payments submitted after this deadline are subject to penalties and interest.

Taxpayers can file their returns in three ways:

• Electronically file for free through the Department of Revenue’s Louisiana Taxpayer Access Point (LaTAP) web portal.
• Submit returns using commercially available tax preparation software.
• Use a printed state return, which can be found on the Department of Revenue’s website under the ‘Tax Forms’ page.

Officials remind taxpayers that a six-month filing extension is automatically available to anyone needing extra time to prepare their state individual income tax returns. However, this extension applies only to filing returns and does not provide additional time to pay taxes due.

According to officials, this automatic filing extension, which does not require a request to obtain, gives taxpayers until Nov. 17, 2025, to file their 2024 state individual income tax returns.

The extension was created by Act 410 of the 2022 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature.
