LECOMPTE, La. (KALB) - A Lecompte woman battling cancer and her husband say they returned home from a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday, March 11, to find a tree had fallen through their roof and into their living room after a bout of severe weather moved through the Central Louisiana region.

“We came home to this,” the woman said. “When I opened the front door, there was a tree in my living room with everything being rained on.”

The couple attempted to call emergency officials, but when police responded to the scene, they told them to collect any salvageable belongings and leave. The couple was shocked when no further assistance was offered. Red Cross officials surveyed the scene the following day on Thursday, but according to the woman, they could offer little assistance beyond a money card for a one-time purchase. The woman said she estimates that about half of her possessions were damaged in the incident.

“There was no resources, there was no... ‘We’re coming there to help you,’ there was nobody to say anything to us,” the woman said. “I mean, how do you just leave somebody...thank God we have a vehicle.”

To further compound their setbacks, the woman said she has been battling cancer and has upcoming doctor’s appointments and surgeries she is now uncertain she will be able to keep.

“You gotta have a roof over your head so you can take care of yourself once you go to the doctor,” she said.

According to the couple, they are disabled and not employed, relying on Social Security and disability checks, alongside sales at their local farmers’ market to make ends meet.

With their home’s condition in question, and reportedly weak communication from their landlord, the couple says the incident has left them directionless with no clear solution in sight.

“You can’t live in a hotel the rest of your life,” the woman said. “That adds up quick [financially].”

The couple did not wish to appear on camera. They have created a GoFundMe page that can be viewed by clicking here.
