Alexandria police chief outlines safety plan for RiverFete
Officers will staff three entry points with weapon screenings as crowds gather downtown
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - UPDATE: KALB reached out to the City of Alexandria to see if there were any change of plans due to the potential for severe weather on Thursday night. Here’s what we were told:
ORIGINAL STORY:
RiverFete is set to begin this weekend, with large crowds expected to gather in downtown Alexandria for the music festival.
Alexandria Police Chief Chad Gremillion said the department has a plan in place for the event.
“We feel really good about protecting the citizens and those that are coming from outlying communities to participate in Fete this weekend,” he said.
Security measures
The plan includes three designated entry points at Third and Desoto, Fifth and Murray and Third and Washington.
“Everyone will go through a wanding to check for weapons. We have prohibited items,” Gremillion said.
Prohibited items include drones, large bags, coolers, weapons, drugs, ATVs or golf carts and outside alcohol.
Officers will be stationed throughout the enclosed downtown area near City Hall and at each entrance.
“We’ll have everything corded off with barricades and traffic diverting measures,” Gremillion said.
New age requirement
A new rule this year requires children under 16 to be accompanied by an adult.
“It’s not our responsibility to take care of and to supervise 16-year-olds, but we want the family to come out. Just come out with your parents,” Gremillion said.
Rain or shine
Rain is in the forecast, but organizers said the festival will go on. Attendees are encouraged to bring rain gear.
Gremillion said, unless lightning moves in, they are going to let the good times roll.
