Jay McCully
Anchor/Reporter

Jay McCully joined the KALB team in July of 2024.
He was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Texas Tech University. While in college, Jay explored his passion for journalism. He participated in the University’s bi-weekly newscast, where he anchored the show and reported as well. Jay also interviewed Senator Ted Cruz. The highly-watched 2018 Senate race between Senator Cruz and his opponent Robert Francis O’Rourke sparked Jay’s interest in political journalism.
While driving for Uber one night during his senior year, Jay checked social media and found there was a lot of commotion happening on Broadway Street across from campus. He went home, grabbed his camera and went after the story. When he arrived on the scene, he found himself in the middle of a full-on riot. He was the only student journalist to document all the chaos that ensued after the Texas Tech basketball team punched their ticket to the NCAA championship.
Jay also interned with a local Latino magazine while in college. There, he enriched his writing skills while also lifting Hispanic voices in the region. He is conversational in Spanish, so if you see him, make sure to say, “Hola!“
Some of Jay’s hobbies include working out, attending concerts, admiring art and trying new restaurants. Growing up in the food capital of the south, he has high expectations of the food he eats. So, if you have any recommendations, only send him the best of Cenla.
