River Fête kicks off with Dinner on the Bricks in Alexandria
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - Alex River Fête is officially underway, with crowds gathering Thursday night for the festival’s traditional kickoff event, Dinner on the Bricks.
The annual event transforms downtown Alexandria into a lively outdoor dining space, bringing together food vendors, live music, and families from across Central Louisiana.
“Dinner on the Bricks has been a tradition here since the beginning of River Fête,” Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy said.
Weather doesn’t dampen turnout
Despite some early concerns about rain, the weather didn’t slow things down.
Vendors and organizers said they expected a strong turnout regardless, and that’s exactly what they got.
“If the rain were here, or if the rain wasn’t here. We were going to be excited either way for the support and the food. We knew people were going to come out either way,” vendor Adrian Lopez said.
Community shows up, including first-timers
The event drew both longtime attendees and newcomers, including visitors from Vernon Parish experiencing River Fête for the first time.
“I mean, there are so many people out here. I think it’s a really good thing for the community to come together,” Liz Dreisbach said. “Hit up The Royal Onion, that was so good.”
For many, the night was about more than just food; it was about connection.
“Being born and raised in Alexandria and being the first ever Miss Fete, it truly is just amazing seeing everyone come together. That’s what Fete is all about,” said Miss Fête, Gracen Beebe.
A surprise performance at City Hall
Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy teased a surprise throughout the evening, telling attendees, “This would not be the night to miss Dinner on the Bricks.”
The reveal: a live musical performance on the steps of City Hall, adding to the festival atmosphere.
More events ahead, rain plans in place
With more River Fête events scheduled through the weekend, city leaders are preparing for possible rain during Friday night’s King George concert.
A large tent has been set up in front of the stage, and covered viewing areas, including the steps of City Hall, will be available so attendees can still enjoy the show.
Still time to join the fun
River Fête continues through the weekend, with additional food, music, and family-friendly events planned.
Organizers say there’s still plenty of time for the community to come out and take part in one of Alexandria’s biggest summer traditions.
